BYD Seagull sales exceeded one million in two years

According to China Electric Vehicle(EV) Data, BYD's best-selling car Seagull exceeded 1 million cumulative sales in the first week of June. This includes domestic and overseas sales.

The pure electric hatchback was launched in April 2023 and deliveries began in May 2023, which means it broke the sales mark of 1 million units in 25 months. Data from the China Electric Vehicle Data Tracking Center shows that in China, Seagull accounts for nearly 13% of BYD brand sales.

According to data provided by BYD, BYD sold 60,131 Seagulls last month, bringing cumulative sales to 992,637. Data from the China Electric Vehicle Data Tracking Center shows that Seagull's sales exceeded 1 million units in the first week of June.

On June 6, BYD officially announced at the BYD Seagull 06 pure electric vehicle(EV) launch conference in Chengdu that Seagull sales have approached 1 million units, which most likely refers to the cumulative sales as of the end of May.

The starting price of the Seagull when it goes on sale in 2023 is 73,800 RMB (about 10,270 US dollars). Two years later, the starting price of this pure electric vehicle has dropped to 63,800 RMB (about 8,880 US dollars), which shows that the price of Chinese electric vehicles is quite low even in the entry-level market.

The BYD Seagull has a range of up to 405 kilometers under CLTC conditions, thanks to a 38.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and a 55 kW motor. It is equipped with an Nvidia Drive Orin N chip and a basic version of the ADAS system. BYD is committed to promoting the "popularization" and commercialization of assisted driving.

Last month, on May 21, the BYD Seagull was launched in Europe under the name of "Dolphin Surf". The BYD Seagull EV starts at 19,990 euros (about $23,000) and is equipped with a larger battery pack, a more powerful motor, and a body length that is 210 mm longer than the Chinese-made Seagull.

In 2025 (January to May), BYD Seagull sold 144,204 units in the Chinese market, an increase of 8.7% year-on-year. This makes it the third best-selling car in the Chinese market, second only to the second-ranked Wuling Hongguang MINI EV (sales of 144,953 units) and Geely Xinyuan (sales of 164,049 units).
